Five Iredell County Detention Center inmates face felony charges following a criminal investigation sparked by the overdoses of two inmates, including one who later died.
About 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, detention officers observed two inmates experiencing symptoms of a drug overdose, Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release Tuesday.
The detention Officers rendered medical assistance to the inmates and requested Iredell County EMS personnel respond to the jail after one of the inmates lost consciousness, Campbell said. Both inmates were subsequently transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Although one of the inmates was treated and returned to the jail, the other inmate — identified by the ICSO as Allison Grace Rice, 22, of Mooresville — died in the hospital after being in the intensive care unit for about a week, according to the news release.
During the initial response, detention officers discovered that one of the inmates was in possession of a small amount of a controlled substance, Campbell said. As a result, the affected cell block was placed on lockdown to allow for a thorough search. ICSO detectives responded to the jail to assist.
During the search, another inmate housed in the same cell block was also found to be in possession of a small amount of a controlled substance, Campbell said.
Detectives then initiated an investigation to determine how the controlled substance entered the facility. The investigation included a review of surveillance footage and interviews with inmates and Detention Center personnel.
Evidence obtained during the investigation revealed that an inmate housed in the same cell block, identified as Shylyn Danyale Carpenter, had concealed a controlled substance in her body when she was processed into the jail on January 19, the sheriff said. The substance was concealed in a manner that rendered it undetectable by security scanners during the initial search process.
Carpenter was processed into the jail, along with her boyfriend, Tony Eugene Maynard, after both were arrested by the Mooresville Police Department on drug-related charges, Campbell said.
The investigation revealed that while housed in the cell block, Carpenter conspired with three other female inmates to distribute the controlled substance to additional inmates, according to the news release. Those actions resulted in the overdose of the two inmates on January 20, Campbell said.
Because the criminal activity at the jail led to the death of an inmate, the Sheriff’s Office requested the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent investigation. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional charges are possible, Campbell said.
