Iredell County Partnership for Young Children (ICPYC) invites families across Iredell County to celebrate literacy at its annual Read Across America events, featuring two free, in-person celebrations designed to make reading fun and accessible for young children.

Families are invited to join the festivities at:
Statesville: Wednesday, March 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 734 Salisbury Road
Mooresville: Friday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, 919 N. Main Street (while supplies last.)

National Read Across America Day is observed annually on March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

The celebration is part of the National Education Association’s Read Across America initiative, launched in 1998 to inspire children and families to develop lifelong reading habits.

This year’s events will offer an engaging, hands-on experience with literacy-themed activities, games, and crafts. Each child will receive a Dr. Seuss-themed goody bag containing snacks, a book, and additional literacy resources to encourage continued learning at home.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to get children excited about reading while helping remove barriers to access,” said Peyton Barrows, ICPYC literacy and outreach coordinator. “We hope to inspire families to build daily reading routines and connect them with community resources that support early learning.”

Research consistently shows that early childhood is a critical period for developing foundational literacy skills. These early experiences play a vital role in later reading proficiency and long-term academic success. ICPYC supports a variety of programs that promote daily reading and meaningful learning experiences to help children enter school ready to thrive.

As Dr. Seuss famously said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
