The Iredell County Republican Executive Committee is accepting applications to fill an opening for the District 2 seat on the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education.

The vacancy was created by the resignation of board chairman Kevin Angell. He stepped down in late January following an altercation with board member Mike Kubiniec.

Under N.C. law (G.S. 115C-37.1), the executive committee of the political party that the resigning board member was affiliated with has the authority to recommend a replacement to fill this vacancy.

To be eligible, applicants must be registered Republicans and reside within the boundaries of I-SS School Board District 2.

Those who are interested must declare their interest for consideration by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 20. Applicants should include a resume or statement of interest in the open board position. Information should be emailed to chairmaniredellgop@gmail.com and secretaryiredellgop@gmail.com.

Executive Committee Chairman Sean McGowan explained that the GOP cannot officially act until the school board accepts Angell’s resignation.

Earlier this month, the school board deadlocked 3-3 on a motion to accept Angell’s resignation. Three members said that they would not accept Angell’s resignation until school board member Mike Kubiniec resigns.

McGowan said that he believes that the school board will ultimately accept Angell’s resignation. The Executive Committee wants to be ready with its recommendation whenever that occurs, he said.

Applicant Interviews

The Executive Committee will conduct interviews and hear presentations during its regular meeting at 6 p.m. on Monday, February 23. The meeting, which will be held at the Iredell County Agricultural Resource Center, 444 Bristol Drive, Statesville, is open to registered Republicans and unaffiliated residents.
