With weather forecasts calling for ice and snow accumulations that may disrupt electrical service to homes, Iredell County public safety officials are urging residents to take precautions against carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, a serious and potentially deadly risk during power outages.
Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced by fuel-burning appliances and engines.
During winter storms, the use of generators, space heaters, fireplaces, and other alternative heat sources increases — raising the risk of CO buildup indoors when equipment is used improperly or ventilation is inadequate.
Safety Warnings
• Never use generators, grills, camp stoves, or propane heaters indoors, in garages, or near windows and doors. Generators should be operated outdoors, at least 20 feet away from structures.
• Do not heat your home with ovens or stovetops.
• Ensure fireplaces and wood stoves are properly vented** and chimneys are clear.
• Install battery-operated or battery-backup carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home and near sleeping areas. Test them regularly.
• Do not run vehicles inside garages, even with the garage door open.
Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath. Severe exposure can lead to confusion, loss of consciousness, or death. If a CO alarm sounds or symptoms occur, move to fresh air immediately and call 911.
Weather-related power interruptions can happen quickly during ice and snow events. Residents are encouraged to prepare now by reviewing safe heating practices, checking CO detectors, and planning for alternative warmth and power sources that prioritize safety.
