Iredell County Rescue Squad hosted a weekend training session February 20-22, involving members from  agencies such as Iredell County Search & Rescue, Harmony Fire, and Davie County Rescue. Instructors Clayton Llewellyn and Eric Wiseman provided exceptional instruction, equipping participating first responders with techniques for various scenarios they may encounter.

When emergencies occur in remote terrain, steep embankments, wooded areas, or confined spaces, standard rescue techniques may not be adequate. That is why wilderness ropes and rigging training is a critical component of operational readiness for these rescue organizations. Through coordinated training and shared expertise, these agencies ensure they are prepared to respond safely, efficiently, and professionally when the community needs them most.

Meeting the Challenges of Rural & Wilderness Rescues

The N.C. Piedmont region includes rugged terrain, wooded areas, waterways, and roadways bordered by steep slopes. Motor vehicle crashes, hiking injuries, farm accidents, and lost person searches often occur in environments where traditional access is limited.

Wilderness rope rescue training prepares responders to:
• Safely access patients in steep or hard-to-reach locations;
• Perform high-angle and low-angle rescues;
• Package and transport patients over difficult terrain;
• Operate in remote settings with limited resources; and
• Protect both rescuers and patients from additional harm

This specialized training ensures responders can operate effectively in environments where time, terrain, and safety present significant challenges.

Skills That Save Lives

Training sessions emphasize both technical skills and teamwork. Personnel practice building and operating rope systems designed to safely raise, lower, and stabilize rescuers and patients.
