The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday introduced its newest canine officer, Waldo.

A 2-year-old Goldendoodle, Waldo will work primarily at the Iredell County Detention Center. Specially trained in narcotics detection, he is able to detect the odor of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, PCP, heroin, and MDMA. His presence will serve as a strong deterrent to prevent illegal substances from entering the detention center and will play a vital role in maintaining the safety and security of the detention center.

Waldo will work various shifts at the detention center. He will be utilized to search incoming mail and inmate cells, and conduct proactive searches throughout the facility.

In addition to narcotics detection, Waldo is also trained in tracking and can be deployed outside the detention center to assist deputies in the field with locating missing persons or recovering discarded or concealed evidence.

Waldo’s handler is Deputy Andrew Hess, who has been sworn with the Sheriff’s Office since February 2020. He has served as a Detention Center Deputy and as an Inmate Transport Deputy during his time with the ICSO.
