The First Presbyterian Church Preschool has officially opened its new Little Free Library, welcoming readers of all ages to “take a book, return a book” right on the church grounds.
Located at 125 N. Meeting Street in Statesville, the charming book-sharing box was a collaborative effort led by the preschool and church community. It stands as a dedicated gift from the preschool to the broader downtown Statesville neighborhood, promoting literacy, curiosity, and neighborly connection for children and families.
The Little Free Library movement, with thousands of registered boxes worldwide, encourages free book exchanges to build community and inspire lifelong reading. This new addition joins others in the area, adding another spot for discovery in our historic downtown.
A special ribbon-cutting and dedication marked the official launch on Friday, right before the preschool’s Read Across America book character parade. Everyone is invited to stop by, browse the initial selection of gently used books (many perfect for young readers), contribute titles if you’d like, and enjoy the green space and preschool playground after preschool hours. This event highlights the preschool’s commitment to nurturing young minds beyond the classroom.
“We believe access to books should be as easy as stepping outside,” said Lauren Loftis, curriculum coordinator at FPC Preschool. “This Little Free Library is for our preschool families, church members, and the entire Statesville community—may it spark joy and stories for years to come.”
The library is open 24/7 for self-service. Come explore, share a favorite read, and help keep the shelves stocked!
