Friends and family members are mourning the loss of a Mooresville teen who was fatally injured in a crash involving a golf cart on Monday evening.
Mooresville police officers responded to the scene of the crash, which involved several juveniles, at the intersection of Swamp Rose Drive and Gold Star Lane about 5:14 p.m. Monday. A teenager, identified as Woodland Heights Middle School student Julia Rooney, was seriously injured in the crash and later died.
“Our thoughts are with the families impacted during this difficult time,” the Mooresville Police Department said in a news release.
This incident is still under investigation. The MPD declined to release additional information about the crash.
ATA Cheer Lake Norman shared the news of Julia’s death in a Facebook post, calling the teen “a friend, a light in our gym, and someone who made an impact” on everyone who knew her.
“We know this will be incredibly hard for our athletes, and we want you to know we are here for them every step of the way. Please hug your babies a little tighter tonight.”
Dozens of people, including representatives from other cheer teams throughout the region, posted their condolences on social media.
