A large-scale search effort for a teenager who was reported missing Wednesday afternoon is underway in Iredell County.
Personnel from multiple agencies are working to locate 14-year-old Gideon Ferguson, who was last seen about 4 p.m. Wednesday at his residence on Watermoss Drive in Cleveland, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said in a news release.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives, along with personnel from other agencies, are actively working in the area near the teen’s home, using canines and drones as part of the ongoing search operation. The FBI is also assisting in the effort to locate the teen.
“We are asking the public to stay away from the area so these efforts are not interrupted,” Campbell said. “Extra vehicle and foot traffic can interfere with the work being done, slow down search progress, and disrupt the scent trails our canine teams are actively working to track.”
The teen’s phone and backpack were found at his home, authorities said, and his family ahs expressed their concerns for his safety and well-being.
“This child is not a runaway. He’s a good kid. We are worried sick,” Cindy Gregory, Gideon’s grandmother, said in a Facebook post. “Please get on your knees and pray right now for my grandson Gideon and his safe return.”
A Facebook page, “Finding Gideon” was launched to help in the effort as well.
Administrators at American Renaissance School, where Gideon is a student, said the school is cooperating in the effort.
“We are now asking for your help,” the school said in a message to parents. “If your children attend the middle school, speak to them about the situation, and if even the littlest bit of information is available, please contact the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department and share that information. Help us bring Gideon home.”
