Two families are grieving the loss of their loved ones following a deadly crash on Amity Hill Road in Rowan County.

The collision, which occurred about 11 p.m. on Friday near the Iredell County line, claimed the lives of recent South Iredell High School graduate Skylar Provenza and her boyfriend, Catawba College student Fletcher Harris.

A Rowan County man faces felony charges following the initial crash investigation by the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

According to troopers, Juan Alvarado Aguilar was driving a Chevrolet Silverado that crossed the center line and hit the Honda Accord that Harris and Provenza were traveling in. Alvarado Aguilar was charged with two counts of felony death by vehicle and one count of driving while impaired. He was being held in the Rowan County jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

Provenza’s family, in her obituary, said they were shattered by the 19-year-old’s tragic death. A 2024 graduate of South Iredell High, Provenza was a member of the school’s cheer and softball teams.

“Though her time here was brief, her impact was immeasurable, and her light will never be forgotten,” Skylar’s obituary read.

Harris, a 2023 Bandys High School graduate, was a goalkeeper on the Catawba College men’s soccer team. He recently signed to play with Statesville FC in the club’s inaugural season.

“Our hearts are broken,” Catawba Coach Alex Morais said in a statement. “Fletcher was profoundly loved and will be missed by everyone in our program and community. We are committed to honoring his memory and ensuring his legacy lives on.”
