About 70 people participated in the “Free America” demonstration in Downtown Statesville on Tuesday afternoon, joining in the nationwide protest against the policies and actions of the Trump administration.
Spearheaded by Statesville Fordward Together, the demonstration was held on the Square from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants of different ages turned out with several walking away from work in the middle of the day.
Organizers said the event was held to spotlight growing concerns about authoritarianism, political corruption, and economic insecurity. Participants also collected canned food for Fifth Street Ministries.

I applaud the “Cute” signs, great “energy” and “sentiment”, but the USA is too deep into this Fascist nightmare to believe this is Real Resistance to Trump’s MAGA-Insanity.

I saw a group of patriot Americans exercising their Constitutional right to protest an administration they see led by rapists and murderers who drain our tax dollars with tax breaks, subsidies, and bailouts of their billionaire financiers while the economy, infrastructure, health, and education falls apart. I have never, ever, ever supported anything that Trump has been involved in. Not any of his bankrupted businesses, not his complete fantasy Reality TV show, not and not his large print Trump Bible. I don’t support con-men grifters, anywhere or anytime.

Socialism? Yes, it works great. If you don’t like it, stop driving your car on the public roads, walking on sidewalks, depending on the Police and Fire Departments, demand nothing of public education (and receive nothing, either), avoid all public spaces, parks, and I expect you to renounce all your Social Security benefits as you avoid the Public Library system. Build your own library and stock it with Trump’s ghostwritten books. You will also need to learn to predict your own weather to forecast your own storms, and be prepared to be your own disaster relief service.

On the economy: by the actual data, the U.S. economy performed better under Biden than during Trump’s final years. GDP growth rebounded strongly after COVID (5.9% in 2021), unemployment fell to near-record lows, and job creation exceeded any four-year period in modern history. Inflation was real and painful, but it was a global post-pandemic issue, not uniquely American, and the U.S. recovered faster than most peer nations (OECD, IMF).
On “Democrats paying off billionaires”: wealth inequality accelerated most sharply after the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which permanently lowered corporate taxes and overwhelmingly benefited the top 1%. Multiple studies (ProPublica, Congressional Budget Office) show billionaires often pay lower effective tax rates than working Americans. Corporate subsidies, bailouts, and tax loopholes are bipartisan failures, not a Democratic invention — pretending otherwise ignores decades of policy history.
On immigrants and crime: the claim that undocumented immigrants are flooding the country with rapists and child abusers is flat-out false. Large-scale studies from the American Immigration Council, Stanford, Northwestern, and the Brennan Center consistently show immigrants — documented or not — commit less violent crime than native-born citizens. Individual crimes exist, as they do in every population, but there is no statistical migrant crime wave. That narrative survives only by cherry-picking anecdotes.
On school closures: Biden did not close schools. Schools shut down in spring 2020 under state and local authority — including Republican governors — before Biden was even president. That’s documented by PolitiFact and state education agencies. Yes, learning loss occurred, and yes, education has been struggling for decades — on that we agree — but blaming one administration for a global pandemic response is dishonest.
As for “rapists and criminals,” this isn’t rhetoric — it’s the legal record. Donald Trump was found liable for sexual abuse by a New York jury and separately found liable for massive business fraud, resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties. Multiple senior figures from his administration were criminally convicted — including Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, and Steve Bannon — for offenses ranging from fraud to obstruction, many later pardoned rather than cleared. And more than 1,300 people have been convicted for crimes tied to the January 6 attack, including violent assaults on police officers, after extensive investigations confirmed an attempt to overturn a lawful election. These are findings of courts and juries — not media opinions, not talking points.
You can accuse me of “socialist propaganda” if you want, but I’m citing government data, peer-reviewed research, and nonpartisan analyses. If you have evidence that contradicts this — not cable news talking points, but actual data — bring it. That’s how you enlighten people, and I’m willing to listen.
These are well informed people. You have been misinformed. One day I hope you understand. I was in the same place as you. Then I saw what was real when he was elected the first time.
