A western Iredell County man was hospitalized over the weekend after being beaten with a hammer and robbed by an acquaintance.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced in a news release that Anthony Cornell Brown, 41, of Douglas Avenue NW, Concord, had been arrested and charged in the attack.
ICSO deputies responded to a residence in the 1200 block of Old Mountain Road on Sunday after receiving a report about an assault.
When the deputies arrived on scene, they found man suffering from severe injuries to his head and face, the sheriff said. The victim had been struck repeatedly with a hammer by the suspect, who the victim identified as Brown, according to the news release.
Iredell County EMS personnel transported the victim to a trauma center in Mecklenburg County for emergency medical treatment.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to the residence where the assault occurred and began interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
The victim informed detectives that Brown had been living with him for a short period of time. During an argument, Brown assaulted the victim with a hammer and then forced the victim to open a safe, according to the news release. The suspect then took cash and the keys to the victim’s car and then fled the area in the vehicle, Campbell said.
Deputies notified surrounding agencies and entering the victim’s vehicle into a national database of stolen vehicles. Detectives then obtained information that Brown was possibly in the Charlotte area, the sheriff said.
With the assistance of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Brown was located in Charlotte and was in possession of the victim’s vehicle, according to the news release.
Brown was arrested and transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was charged with Felony Attempted First-Degree Murder, Felony Robbery with Dangerous Weapon, Felony Second-Degree Kidnapping, Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle, Misdemeanor Communicating Threats, and Misdemeanor Crime of Domestic Violence.
Brown was ordered held without bond by Magistrate T. Thompson.
According to the ICSO, the suspect’s criminal record includes the following charges: two counts of Misdemeanor First-Degree Battery, Misdemeanor Assault on a Female, and Misdemeanor Communicating Threats.
