South Iredell High School teacher and girls basketball coach Mariah Johnson thought she was helping with a Red Cross disaster preparedness activity with her PE students in the school’s performing arts center on Thursday morning.

Instead, Principal Robert Little and WCNC new anchor Vanessa Ruffes shocked Johnson with the announcement of her selection as WCNC’s Hometown Hero and unveiled a black Hyundai Santa Fe, provided by partner Charlotte Area Hyundai Dealers, in recognition of Johnson’s dedication to serving her students and community.

The Hyundai Hometown Hero program celebrates teachers who go above and beyond, both in the classroom and in the community.

After playing along with Little’s ruse, Ruffes transitioned to talking about the people who “show up every single day, going above and beyond, doing the very most not because they have to but because they want to make an impact on the folks around us.”

Ruffes then revealed that she was here to surprise someone who is “doing the very most” for their communities.

“In fact, this person is here on the stage with me right now. We are talking about somebody who has an absolute heart of gold. We are talking about somebody who goes above and beyond in every possible way,” she said.

“She starts her day before most of us are even awake, driving a school bus, and then coming here into the school to teach folks, to guide folks, to mentor folks, and then after that final bell rings, she’s still here, working into the evening, coaching, guiding her team to wins but also to being the best human beings possible.”

“If you haven’t guessed already — Mariah Johnson, congratulations! — you are our Hometown Hero.”

Johnson, wiping away tears, hugged Ruffes as the crowd of students, along with her family and friends, cheered.

Hyundai’s Alex Pashell then presented Johnson with car keys as the stage curtains opened to reveal her SUV, a much welcomed gift since her car died two weeks ago.

Johnson’s mother Cindy, aware of the coming award, had to discourage Mariah from car shopping with a variety of excuses.

After a quick look at the SUV and a hug with her mom, Johnson thanked Ruffes and Hyundai for the recognition and took a moment to counsel the students on the importance of being disciplined, working hard, continuously seeking to improve themselves, and serving others.

A beaming Johnson then backed the SUV out of the cargo doors and took a drive around the school to the cheers of MJROTC students doing PT on the lawn.

Family and friends surprised her, along with a large group from Troutman Ruritan Club, where Johnson serves as president.

In addition to coaching basketball, Johnson also serves as Interact Club adviser and drives the team buses for other sports.

Her mother, one of Mariah’s nominators for the recognition, said of her daughter, “What makes Mariah a hero in my eyes is not just what she does — it’s the heart and faith behind everything she does.”

“She pours herself into her students, her basketball team, and even complete strangers with the same level of compassion and dedication,” she added. “And on many nights, she doesn’t walk out of those school doors until 11 p.m. because she is in the gym coaching, mentoring, and pushing her team toward victory — not just on the scoreboard, but in life.”

Her mother cited faith as Mariah’s anchor. “It fuels her compassion, strengthens her when she is tired, and reminds her why she serves so faithfully,” Cindy explained. “Even on the hardest days, when she is exhausted and pulled in a hundred directions, she still shows up with a smile. That smile isn’t just kindness; it’s strength, grace, and unshakable faith.”

“To me, a hero is someone who consistently chooses others over themselves, who leads with humility, who serves without expecting applause, and who makes the world better in quiet, powerful ways. That is Mariah. She doesn’t wear a cape. She wears a whistle, carries lesson plans, leads with love, and walks in faith. And that is exactly what makes her a hero.”
