Union Grove Elementary School has taken a major step toward creating a more inclusive environment for all students, thanks to the generosity of community partners and supporters.
With the help of a grant from Partners Behavioral Health Management, a new adaptative swing for children with special needs was recently installed on the school’s playground. The swing, which cost $8,000, will provide students with greater opportunities for play, independence and inclusion.
School leaders expressed their appreciation to Jerry Campbell, community engagement specialist with Partners, for his guidance and support throughout the grant process.
The project was further strengthened by the generosity of Statesville Fence as Benjamin Galliher donated both the fencing and installation services. His contribution ensures the playground meets state safety requirements while remaining a secure space for all students.
Principal Keeley Ward said students and staff alike have embraced the new addition, which represents progress toward a more accessible campus for all students.
Exceptional Children Learning Impairment Teacher Rhonda York expressed her gratitude to the project’s supporters.
“Your generous donation has given our students more than just a swing. You’ve given them freedom, joy and inclusion,” she said. Thank you for making a meaningful difference in their lives.”
“We are proud to be a school where Tigers and their community always stand together to grow at the Grove,” Ward added.
Efforts are ongoing to upgrade the outside area, with current fundraising focused on adding shade tarp structures to keep students cool and comfortable during warmer months. The cost is more than $30,000.
