
Fred Matney, 80, of Harmony, N.C., peacefully passed away on October 28, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. One of 13 children, Fred was born March 29, 1945, in Panther, W.Va., the son of Kennis Matney and Lou Jane Ashby Matney.
Fred served in the United States Navy and worked tirelessly as a coal miner to provide for his family. He married Edith Lambert on September 10, 1966, and they went on to create a beautiful family. Fred loved to hunt, fish, garden, and make people laugh, but the joy of his life was becoming a grandfather.
Remaining to cherish Fred’s memory are his wife of 59 years, Edith; and children, Darrin (Michelle), Kristie (Donnell), Angie, Cindy (Allen), and Michael. He will be lovingly remembered by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, precious family members and lifelong friends.
Military Honors will be presented on November 4, 2025, at 2:30 p.m. at Salisbury National Cemetery Annex. A memorial service will be held that evening (November 4, 2025) at 5 p.m. at Word of Truth in Jesus Name in Harmony, N.C. Pastor Darlene Reed and Minister Lana Lambert will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C.
