Gary Paul Butts, 79, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Gary was born in Houston, Texas on September 17, 1946, to Paul Beverly Butts and Wanda Veazey Butts.

Gary served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Navy, eventually retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. While in the Navy, he was a member of the first graduating class of Physician Assistants. He also played Navy volleyball and spent time stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. He continued working as a PA after his naval career until he retired in 2020.

He was a member of the Wilderness Medical Society and of Kennesaw Lodge #33 in Georgia. Gary was an avid runner until he was no longer able to due to a disability.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Michael Butts and Robert Butts; sister, Susan Butts; and granddaughter, Kari Walvatne.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Butts; daughters, Sherri Butts and Beverly Lynn Butts; grandchildren, Amanda Butts, Heather Walvatne, J.P. Johnson, and Kenneth Walvatne; and great-grandchildren, Michael, Haley, Jason, Scarlett, and Leon Paul Butts.

A graveside service with military honors for Gary will be held Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Committal Shelter at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex.
