Gary Wayne Johnson, 66, of Troutman, N.C., passed away on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at his home. He had been in declining health for several years, but his death was still unexpected.

Gary was born on July 14, 1959, in Statesville and was the son of the late Parks and Flora (Bonnie) Sharpe Johnson. He attended Iredell County Schools and was a graduate of South Iredell High School.

Gary worked most of his life as a carpenter and builder. He honed his skills by working for Paul Munday Builders, but Gary had a natural talent for finishing the intricate wood details in a home. He was self-employed during the last years of his work life. Gary became disabled due to the progression of Polycystic Kidney Disease (a hereditary disease from his mother’s side of the family). He attended dialysis three times a week and made many friends at the dialysis center.

Gary’s passion was riding his Harley motorcycle. He owned motorcycles all his life, starting with a mini-bike when he was a kid. He enjoyed nothing more than rides to the mountains with his many friends who also enjoyed riding. Gary also followed NASCAR and enjoyed taking his Snap-On Truck, which he converted to a camper, to the racetrack on the weekends.

Gary was also a part-time farmer, spending many days helping his father and brothers putting up hay and working with the cows.

Gary is survived by his son, Jacob Parks Johnson; his former wife, Dana Johnson; two brothers, Mike Johnson (Debbie) and Alan Johnson (Sharon); and two sisters, Linda Wilson (Dale) and Kim Johnson (Steve). He is also survived by one aunt, Martha Gaylord, and one uncle, Tommy Sharpe. He is also survived by nieces, Erin Hutchens (Patrick) and Stephanie Shaw (Chris); nephews, Josh Wilson (Stacey), Adrian Johnson (Autumn) and Bradley Johnson (Lauren); and many great nieces and great nephews. Gary also had a wide circle of friends. He cherished the time they spent together and the memories made. His cat, Buster, was a faithful companion during the last few years.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Family Farm, 754 Ostwalt Amity Road, Troutman, N.C. Visitation with the family will be after the service. Please bring your own chair.
