Ms. Gladys Louise St. Fort, 85, of Holland Circle, Statesville, N.C., passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, atthe Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. She was born on March 1, 1940, in Alexander County and was the daughter of the late Thirksell E. Mauney and Flora Mildred Miller Mauney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Clement St. Fort, whom she married in 1974 (Patrick passed away on September 11, 2001); four sisters, Mildred Banks, Mary Alice Gray, Geraldine Gaines Stovall and Jeanette Mauney; as well as one brother, Joseph Mauney.
Gladys was a 1959 graduate of Unity High School. She attended Winston-Salem Teacher College (now Winston-Salem State University). In 1971 she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and worked as a CNA. She loved her work and did it faithfully. She was also a faithful member of “Coming of Jesus Baptist Church” in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served on the Usher Board, Missionary Committee, and Senior Choir and as Pastor’s Aid. After 34 years of service, she retired from Menorah Nursing Home in 2005 and moved back home to Statesville in 2007.
Gladys was a member of Shiloh AME Zion Church, where she faithfully served as a Deaconess and in various other ministries. Gladys leaves to cherish her memory one son, Scotty Jerome Mauney, of Winston-Salem; one sister, Bertha Hamilton; one sister-in-law, Patricia Mauney; one brother-in-law, Raymond (Dorthy) Gray of Woodleaf; guardians Gilbert (Marcia) Hamilton of Statesville; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and great friends. Also surviving is her Special BF of 54 years, Evelyn Best of Brooklyn, N.Y.
Members of the family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Shiloh AME Zion Church, and the funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Patricia Gainer officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Statesville. At other times, the family will assemble at the residence of her nephew, Gil (Marcia) Hamilton, located at 326 Magnolia Street in Statesville.
