James Dalton Carson was born on August 28,1944, to Henry K. Carson and Mary E. Dalton in Hamptonville, N.C. While growing up, he spent a lot of time with his grandfather Millard Dalton “Poppa,” whom he cherished and credits for teaching him a strong work ethic as well as financial and family responsibility. After high school, he relocated to Corona, N.Y., where he resided until his passing.

James served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969, earning the rank of E5 Sergeant. In 1966, he married the love of his life, Willene P. Summers. To this union four sons were born, Millard Eugene, Reginald Renod, James Kedrick and Jonathan Gerard. They remained married 47 years until her passing in 2013. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Leonard Gabriel.

“Jcee,” as he was affectionately known by family and friends, was a highly respected pillar in the Corona community and regarded as a hardworking, stand-up, no nonsense, man’s man. He loved his family and helped many people in the community. James enjoyed cars, boxing, baseball, and billiards. He retired from the Mass Transit Authority (MTA) after 40 years of service. After retirement, he ramped up his billiards game and became a semi-professional, winning numerous competitive awards. He transitioned on Monday, October 20, 2025, at New York Presbyterian Queens Hospital after a period of declining health.

James is survived by four sisters, Garchelle Carson of Charlotte, N.C., Paula Gabriel of Troutman, N.C., Cathy (Walter) Cornelius of Greensboro, N.C., and Sheila (Eddie) Boller of Statesville, N.C.; four sons, Eugene (Fiona) Carson, Reggie (Tonya) Carson, James (Brenda) Carson Jr. and Jonathan Carson; nine grandchildren, Terrell, Wylear, Jocelyn, T. J. Shongo, Joshua, Matthew, Jada and Miles as well as seven great grandchildren.

Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Saturday, November 1, 2025, at 12 noon. The First Baptist Church, Harmony, N.C. Reverend Jeffery Miller will officiate and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 11 a.m. until 12 noon.
