
James Martin Scheffer was born July 23, 1928, in Akron, Ohio. He passed away at 97 in the presence of family Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Mooresville, N.C.
Jim survived his loving wife of 73 years Margaret (Stafford) Scheffer (1930-2023) and his youngest child, Carol (Scheffer) Mercer (1962-2016). Jim also survived his two sisters, Helen Baughman and Marion Webb, twin brother Gus, and brother Billy.
He is survived by his daughter, Karen Chapman-Miller of Mooresville, N.C., and son Gus of Atlanta, Ga. Jim was a devoted grandfather to Brandon Chapman (Eustis, Fla.), Evan Scheffer (Seneca, S.C.), Sarah (Miller) Schoen (Greenville, S.C.), Stacey Scheffer (Atlanta, Ga.), and Lindsey (Miller) Schiefen (Asheville, N.C.), and five great-grandchildren.
Jim attended Buchtel High School and graduated from Akron University. He was drafted into the Army, deployed to Korea in 1950, and received an honorable discharge as a Master Sergeant in 1952. He spent 33 years in the printing and direct mail advertising industry at the Crawford Company in Akron, Ohio.
Jim and Margaret first retired to Mount Dora, Fla., before moving to Wichita, Kan., to be with daughter Carol, husband Don Mercer, and granddaughter Melissa. Several years after Carol’s passing in 2016, Jim and Margaret moved to Mooresville, N.C., to be near their daughter Karen and their N.C. grandchildren.
A small family service is planned for April 2026 in Akron with final interment in Wichita, Kan. Donations can be made to VIA Health Partners (Hospice), 705 Griffith Street, Davidson, NC 28036 in Jim’s behalf.
