Janet Frances Rodgers Barnette, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 71 on December 23, 2025, at Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville, N.C. Born on March 12, 1954, in Iredell County to the late Robert Junior Rodgers and Sarah Rebecca Martin Rodgers, Janet lived a life marked by devotion to family, community, and faith.
A proud graduate of Mooresville High School, Janet pursued her passion for helping others by undertaking X-Ray training at Lowrance School of Nursing. She dedicated many years of her life as a medical office technician, serving with care and compassion under the guidance of Dr. Copeland and Dr. Dunlap. Her commitment to healing extended far beyond her professional life, as she was known as the family “Rock,” the one to whom many turned for comfort and support in times of need.
Janet was a lifelong member of Shearer Presbyterian Church, where she proudly participated in the church’s softball team during her youth. Her zest for life was evident not only in her sportsmanship but also in her love for fishing adventures alongside her late husband, Thomas Franklin “Tommy” Barnette. Known for her spirited fandom, Janet cherished the legends of racing, displaying her loyalty to icons Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.
As a member of Beta Sigma Phi, Janet deeply valued her connections within the community, always eager to lend a hand or support a cause. She is remembered fondly for her generosity and the warmth she brought to all those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Franklin “Tommy” Barnette. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Casey Barnette Meares (Alan); her son, Robert E. Barnette; brother, Robert “Bobby” Rodgers; sister, Becky Bradford; beloved grandchildren, Liliah Andrews and Sarah Barnette; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will carry on her legacy of love.
Family and friends will gather to honor Janet’s remarkable life on Tuesday, December 30, 2025. They will share memories and celebrate her life during a visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. at Shearer Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, followed by a service at 2 p.m. in the church sanctuary, officiated by Rev. Dr. Stephen Stout. Janet will be laid to rest in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County, ensuring that Janet’s spirit of giving continues to touch the lives of others.
The Barnette family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support during this time of grief.
Arrangements are being handled with care by Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.cavin-cook.com.
