Jerry Wayne Fortner, 89, of Troutman, N.C., passed away on September 3, 2025, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, N.C.

A native of Iredell County, he was born on October 28, 1935, to the late Robert Edward Fortner and Callie Leona Troutman Fortner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Clyde “Bill” Reid Fortner and Glenn Allen “Buck” Fortner; a sister, Theda Lorraine Fortner Rogers; and an infant son, Christopher Robin Fortner.

Jerry attended Troutman Schools during his early years before serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he began a long and dedicated career with the Builtright Chair Company, where he worked as a truck driver and later served as plant manager, retiring after 48 years of service.

A man of few words, Jerry was known for his quiet strength, dry wit, and steadfast passions. He loved collecting coins, enjoyed shooting sports, and was a devoted fan of Westerns. He was also a lifelong supporter of the Atlanta Braves and the San Francisco 49ers. Jerry was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Troutman.

The true essence of who Jerry was, however, was most clearly seen in his 66-year marriage to his beloved wife, Judith “Judy” Gaye Brown Fortner. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and unwavering commitment. Their union was blessed with a son, Curtis W. Fortner of Troutman, and a daughter, Jerlyn Fortner Dishmond, also of Troutman.

He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Kortney Hooks Myers and her husband Chris, and Colby Preston Dishmond and his wife Courtney, all of Statesville, N.C. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Addington and Tate Myers, and he was joyfully anticipating the arrival of another great-granddaughter, Chandler Layne Dishmond, in November 2025.

A memorial service in remembrance of Jerry’s life will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville, N.C., with the Rev. William S. “Bill” Troutman officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
