John “Gus” Thomas Gustafson, 78, of Mooresville, N.C., passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025. in his home.

He was born June 20, 1946, in Willmar, Minn., to the late Elmer Gustafson and Ramona Knapper Gustafson.

John graduated from Willmar High School and Gustavus Adolphus College. He served his country while in the U.S. Air Force. Gus was a member at Fair View United Methodist Church in Mooresville. He loved singing in the choir in honor of his Lord and Savior. John was an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scouts of America Troop 173 while Erik earned his Eagle Scout, and he enjoyed helping them out when needed. In retirement, he remained active in the community through the Central Lake Norman Golden Boys. He enjoyed traveling the country in his motorhome alongside his wife and other friends from the Nomads RV Club and the Winnebago WIT Club.

In addition to his parents, John was also preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Donald Vance, Larry Nelson, and Doug Jandro.

He is survived by his wife Linda Nelson Gustafson; son Erik; sisters Julie (Robert) Ramerth and Joan Vance; sister-in-law Nancy Jandro; brother-in-law David (Tammy) Nelson; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Fair View United Methodist Church.
