Marie Myers Mitchell, 103, of Maitland, Fla., passed away Monday, August 4, 2025. Born in Yadkin County, N.C., on September 23, 1921, Marie was the daughter of the late Homer Clay Myers Sr. and Laura Frances Hobson Myers.
Marie graduated from Union Grove High School in 1939 and from Mitchell Community College in Statesville, N.C., in 1940. She was married to J. Harold Mitchell for 61 years before his passing in 2015. Together they were members of First Baptist Church in Winter Park, Fla., since 1960. She served the church for decades on the hospitality committee — planning, organizing, decorating and serving receptions, banquets and gatherings of all kinds. Marie was a lifetime artist, continuously learning new crafts, sewing, and painting. Over the last 40 years she fell in love with porcelain china painting, which she was still doing regularly at her home in Maitland until age 101.
Marie shared her unwavering faith and the love of her family, friends and church throughout her life. This is what absolutely sustained her through happy times as well as heartache and illness. Her life was one well loved and well lived.
Marie is survived by her son, Joseph Homer Mitchell; her sister, Betty Jean Myers Miller; a sister-in-law Mary Ann Myers, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews and great-grandnieces/nephews, and wonderful family and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband and her son, Gary Edward Hoots; brothers, Homer Clay Myers Jr., Billy Ray Myers and Howard Vaughn (Jack) Myers; brother-in-law, Andrew P. Miller Jr.; and sister-in-law, Nancy I Myers.
A memorial service will be Saturday, August 9, 2025, at First Baptist Church in Winter Park, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. and funeral services immediately following at 11 a.m.
