Martha Copley Scruggs passed away on May 9, 2025, after a period of declining health.

She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love to those she adored. She was born the second child of Olene and Lee Copley in Salisbury, N.C., on June 26, 1936. She married the love of her life, Lyle Scruggs, on June 16, 1957.

She is survived by her son, Kevin Scruggs and wife Laura; grandson, Kyle Scruggs (Lake); and granddaughter, Hannah; and sisters, Annie Lee Kluttz, Aggie Peninger, and Cathy Joyner; along with many nieces and nephews. She had a big heart because she had a big family with so many to love.

She was a bookkeeper for Service Plumbing and Heating for many years but spent most of her years keeping house and being the best wife and mom anyone could ask for. Martha was very active in the Eastern Star, serving in many positions including Worthy Matron and District Deputy. She was also a very accomplished golfer after taking the game up in her 40s. She and Lyle won many tournaments at Cowans Ford Country Club, where they were charter members. She will always have the family record for the longest drive of over 400 yards even though it was contested by Lyle and Kevin because it was cart path aided.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; her husband of 62 years Lyle; sister, Shirley Wilkerson; and brother, Buddy Copley.

Martha collected Frog figurines of every kind. FROG – Fully Rely on God — was her motto. It is how she lived life.

The family would like to send their sincere thanks and gratitude to the staff at Lake Norman Dialysis for their love and kindness over the past eight years. You were all her second family, and she loved you all. Also, a special thank you to her sister Cathy Joyner for giving so much and taking time away from her family to help care for mom this past year.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 6 p.m. with reception of friends following. Wear something red if you come.

Memorials can be made to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 454 Fieldstone Road, Mooresville NC 28115, or to the National Kidney Foundation.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home and Crematory, Mooresville, is serving the Scruggs family. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.cavin-cook.com.
