Montoya Shambria Payne, affectionately known as Toya, passed away on November 4, 2025. Born on December 24, 1993, she was the first child born to Evetta Payne and the late Marcus Vanderburg in Iredell County, N.C. She received her education at Mecklenburg and Iredell County schools. She was known for showing deep love to people and animals alike. She was also athletic and played basketball and softball during her youth.
She was a caring friend to many and will be especially missed. She also had a deep appreciation for food and cooking, which was fostered through her close relationship with her mother, Evetta, and grandmother, Emma. She would often accompany her mother during her catering gigs and would provide assistance the only way Toya could. She was also known for her laid back personality. Additionally, she was extremely close to her brother, Brandon “BB” Payne. Brandon and Toya were an inseparable and dynamic duo who lived life to the fullest together. Now the dynamic-duo are together again!
She was a loving mother to Braya Evetta Payne and Brandon Willie Payne. She showered them with affection and considered them to be her greatest accomplishments. Despite their brief time with her, their mother’s love, mannerisms and physical attributes will live on through them. She loved her “Peanut” and “Man-Man/B2.”
Despite the abundance of love that she gave to the world, Montoya’s untimely passing leaves an unfathomable void in the lives of her loved ones. She will be greatly missed and grieved forever.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marcus Vanderburg; brother, Brandon Payne; her aunts, Audrey and Beverly Payne; her grandmothers, Faith Vanderburg and Emma Payne; and grandfather, Willie James Payne.
