Roger M. Callahan, 80, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on October 9, 2025. He was born in Taunton, Mass., to the late Josephine B. Callahan and Lawrence T. Callahan.
Mr. Callahan was an electronic engineer, graduating from Northeastern University in Boston Mass. He was a graduate of the Harvard University’s Senior Official in National Security and a 1985 graduate of the National Defense University Industrial College of Armed Service (ICAF).
He spent his first career (34 years) at the National Security Agency. As a young engineer in the 1970s, he designed and sourced many microelectronic Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuits when the microelectronic industry was in its infancy. He managed several organizations that provided secure communications capabilities for many national security systems and was elevated to the Senior Executive Service (SES). In 1995 he was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Director for Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (ASDC3I) as Director of Information Security within the Pentagon. Retiring from government service in 1998, he joined Bank of America’s Corporate Information Security, advancing their security. He represented the bank as an industry representative on the President’s National Security Telecommunication Advisory Committee (NSTAC). In 2008 he left Bank of America and formed a consulting company, Information Assurance Advisory, LLC and provided guidance and support to many organizations.
His wife, Rebecca Sue (Daniels) Callahan, passed away in 2024. He is survived by his son Michael Callahan and his wife Julie (Seeley) Callahan; and their two children, Lauren Aileen and Joshua Michael. He is further survived by his brothers, Richard and Dennis Callahan, and his sister, Louise Roberts.
A funeral mass at St. Thomas Acquinas Roman Catholic Church, 1400 Suther Road, Charlotte, N.C., will be held on Monday, October 20, at 2 p.m. Following the funeral mass, a private burial will be beside his wife Sue at a graveside ceremony at the Friendship United Methodist Church, 907 Friendship Road, Statesville, N.C.
