With heartfelt sadness, we announce the passing of Russell Anderson Johnston, who died peacefully on May 9, 2025, at the age of 89.
A beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, Russell lived a life marked by integrity, quiet strength, and unwavering devotion to his family and country. Russell was twice widowed. He was first married to Betty Hunsucker Johnston (47 years) and later to Cathy McCombs Johnston (16 years). Both preceded him in death.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ollie Johnston; his brother, James Johnston; and six sisters: Mildred Stikeleather, Cordie Kanipe, Dorothy Mae Johnston, Marie Mitchell, Alice Toungate, and Minnie Whitley; and one great great grand child.
He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Hedrick He is also survived by his five children, daughters Shelia Snyder (Scott), Diana Minter (John), and Melinda Berry (Douglas), and sons Richard Johnston (Pam) and Wayne Johnston (Michel). He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren, Susan Johnston, Benjamin Lackey, Crystal Cornette, Ralph Laws, Terra Miller, Douglas Berry II, Rickie Noble, Michelle Lynn, Meagan Irvine, Christopher Johnston, Nicholas Johnston, Shasta Calderon, Amber Snyder, John Lancaster, and David French. Russell was also blessed with 33 great-grandchildren and six cherished great-great-grandchildren.
Russell served with honor in the United States Air Force for eight years as a radio technician, proudly contributing to the nation’s defense. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant during his service. After his military service, he pursued a successful career in technology, retiring as a lead computer technician for Unisys Corporation. His work ethic, technical skill, and steady presence earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him. One of the highlights of Russell’s life was his service to the Trinity Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer fireman and eventually Fire Chief. He was incredibly dedicated to the department’s success and efficiency, working tirelessly to ensure the safety of his community. His leadership, commitment, and passion for firefighting made an indelible impact on the department and those who served alongside him.
The pallbearers for Russell are John Minter, Benjamin Lackey, Nicholas Johnston, Ralph Laws, Douglas Berry II, and Jeff Noble.
Though he has left this world and is in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, Russell’s legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, in the lives he touched, and in the example he set. His faith, kindness, wisdom, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
