Velma Lucille Smith Ponder, 97, of Statesville, N.C., went to her heavenly home on Monday, July 28, 2025, at Autumn Care of Statesville.
Born on March 21, 1928, in Wayne County, N.C., Velma was the cherished daughter of the late Milford James Smith and Ada Mae Quinn Smith. She was welcomed into eternity by her beloved husband, Joseph DeVance Ponder Jr.; her sister, Lois Brown; and a precious great-niece, Rachel.
Velma found great joy in running her store, Ponder Leather Company of Love Valley. A true lover of life’s simple pleasures, she could often be found listening to country music or enjoying a good fiction novel or short story. Her deep love for horses led her often to the trails, and she cherished every moment spent horseback riding. Velma especially loved traveling and taking trips with her beloved husband Joe — adventures that created some of her most treasured memories.
Known for her wisdom and gentle spirit, Velma offered thoughtful advice and guidance to many. She was a faithful, lifelong member of Love Valley Presbyterian Church, where her presence and faith enriched the lives of those around her. Above all, Velma was a devoted mother who dearly loved her family and held them close to her heart. Her legacy of love, strength, and kindness lives on in every life she touched.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Sherry (Jim) Murph; step-grandchildren, Tommy (Carrie) Murph, Sharon (Lance) Williams, and Ken Murph (fiancée, Tara Nobles), niece, Diane Brown; and good friend Patricia Mcrae.
A memorial service to celebrate Velma’s beautiful life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at Rocky Hill Baptist Church with Pastor Daniel Melton officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the sanctuary.
In honor of Velma’s giving spirit, memorials may be made to Gideon’s International, PO Box 1321, Statesville, NC 28677 or by clicking here or to Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Road, Statesville, NC 28677 or by clicking here.
