
Bessie Lee Black, 80, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville. She was born June 1, 1945, in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Roy Shoemaker and Adeline Cook Shoemaker.
Bessie was a seamstress for most of her working career for Hunters Brothers and Zimmer. She was a member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church and also attended Liberty Baptist in Iredell County. She loved sports and coaching soccer and football. She loved her family and spending time with them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Hack Shoemaker.
Those left to cherish and honor Bessie’s memories include her sons, Jeff Black (Allen) of Statesville and Dorson Black of Statesville; her grandchildren, Moriah, Dylan, and Devan Black; seven great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Carolyn Shoemaker; and many other relatives and friends.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Rocky Hill Baptist Church with a Celebration of Life Service to follow at 1 p.m. Pastor Daniel Milton and Pastor Roger Holland will officiate. Inurnment will be in the church cemetery.
