Dr. Thomas Brevard Templeton, 97, of Statesville, N.C., passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026. He will join his beloved wife Betty with whom he shared a loving and memorable life, beginning with his first “crush” when she was 13 years old. Although she went before him, he cherished her and thought of her daily.

Dr. Templeton was born on August 20, 1928, to the late John Young Templeton Jr., MD, and Mary Williams Templeton in Mooresville, N.C. He served in the United States Navy, graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Statesville.

On August 3, 1952, he married Betty Mallard Templeton and was married for 57 years until her passing in 2010.

Dr. Templeton was the former Chief of Staff of Iredell Memorial Hospital and later served on the hospital Board of Trustees. He served Iredell County through the practice of medicine for 33 years. He was a member of the American College of Cardiology and an adjunct professor at Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

He loved to travel with Betty and his family. Another passion was fishing on “Super Suds” with Jim Rogers, Ed Bell and a cast of others of all ages. Later in life bird watching and feeding became a daily routine. A man of unique knowledge, no subject was beyond his grasp. He was a British car enthusiast and a member of the British Car Club. He was also a member of the Friday Confusion Club and spent many a morning with the McDonald’s group in Statesville and Wrightsville Beach. He was kind and loving to his family and all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Catherine Templeton Willett (Mac); son, Thomas Brem Templeton (Stephany); daughter, Janet Templeton Truslow (Hank); grandchildren, Thomas Willett, Clay Willett, Brevard Templeton, Ashley Virgil, Meredith Templeton, Catherine Truslow, and Henry Truslow; great-grandchildren, Jamie Virgil and Ben Virgil; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Young Templeton III; and sisters, Mary McCulloch Brown and Louisa Templeton Sholar.

A celebration of Thomas will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his honor to a charity of your choice.
