Gary Thomas Barker died on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Born on December 21, 1941, in Iredell County, Gary was the son of the late Dwight and Ruby Grose Barker.

He was a graduate of Cool Springs High School, attended Appalachian College, and was a faithful member of Fairview Baptist Church in Statesville.

Raised in a musical family, Gary dedicated his life to playing guitar and singing. He joined The Catalinas in 1965 and, alongside his brothers Johnny and Lynn, led the band for 56 years, recording numerous albums and performing thousands of shows. As the group’s leader and heartbeat, Gary served as the “glue” that held the band together for decades. He was particularly proud when his brothers rejoined the group to perform together once again. In recognition of their contributions, The Catalinas were inducted into the NC Music Hall of Fame in 2013, and Gary and his brothers were inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Barker.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cynthia “Cyndy” Smith Barker; his daughter, Natalie Barker Thomas (Kevin); his brother, Lynn Barker (Renee); his sisters, Shirley Tester and Marilyn Nicholson (Dale); his grandson, Koren Thomas; his sister-in-love, Rhonda Smith Olive (Joey); and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 12, at Fairview Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Hill and Rev. Dr. Scott Eanes officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 12 noon until 1:30 p.m.
