Immaculata (Verdi) Whalen, lovingly known as “Macky,” passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026 at the age of 88.

Born and raised in Netcong, N.J., Macky carried her vibrant spirit wherever life took her. After marrying, she spent time living in Canada and California before eventually returning to Glacier Hills in Morris Plains, N.J., where she resided for many years. In 2010, she made her home in North Carolina, embracing a new chapter rich with friendship, travel, and adventure.

Macky retired as Vice President of Operations from Frank Palma Associates in Parsippany, N.J., where she formed a lasting friendship with Frank Palma, who affectionately nicknamed her “Maxster.” Their spirited banter reflected the joy she brought to her work and those around her.

Macky had a true flair for fashion and style and loved to shop. She turned her creativity into a business designing and making bridal veils. Macky was an avid reader and lifelong learner whose curiosity never faded and who later became a certified Master Gardener. She enjoyed following Penn State football with her son and grandson. Once she made her home in North Carolina, she was even found reading “NASCAR for Dummies.” Macky was especially known among her family and friends for her homemade cheesecake, which became a signature expression of her love.

In time, Macky reconnected with her high school boyfriend, Jim Dalberg, and the two shared a loving partnership for the rest of her life. Together they enjoyed extensive travel, including many cruises and an unforgettable African safari.

A true social butterfly, Macky was always ready for fun, laughter, and adventure. She shared lifelong friendships that meant the world to her.

In the most recent years, her life was enriched by her devoted companions — Debbie, Sue, Melinda and Lindley — whose compassion and friendship brought laughter, dignity, and great comfort to her days. In her final year, along with her companions, she was lovingly cared for at Sevya Homes in Mooresville, N.C.

Above all, Macky cherished her family. She shared an especially close and unbreakable bond with her daughter. She was a proud grandmother and loved being “GiGi” to her great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her longtime companion, Jim Dalberg; her son, Anthony (Cynthiann) Whalen III; daughter, Stephanie (Brian) Whalen; and her former daughter-in-law, Sophia Schiavo Boyd. She also leaves behind her grandchildren, Dr. Christina (Ricky) Cuellar, Anthony (Mary) Whalen, and Cynthiann’s son, Curtis Filer; her adoring great-grandchildren, Oliver, Emilia, and Levi; her sister and shopping pal, Michele (David) Moss; her nieces and nephews, Tony (Jane), Chris (Mary), Gerilyn, Tricia, Christopher (Cori), Jennifer (Steve), and Sandy (Bruce); great-nieces and great-nephews, and many cousins from her big Italian family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mafalda and Anthony Verdi; her former husband, Tony Whalen; her sister and brother-in-law, Rosina and Jim Codd; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and the Hon. Leonard Ivanoski; and her nephews, Lenny and Langon Ivanoski.

Guided by a quiet but steadfast faith, Macky lived with gratitude, compassion, and an enduring sense of hope. Her joyful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. Rarely was there a photograph of her without a smile, and the word most often used to describe her was simple yet fitting: sweet.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County for their compassion and care during this time. In lieu of flowers, please remember Macky in your own way — perhaps smiling at a favorite story or simply holding her close in your thoughts. For those who wish, a memorial donation may be made in her memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County (hoic.org), Dementia Alliance of North Carolina (dementianc.org), or Research to Prevent Blindness (rpbusa.org).

Macky’s memory lives on in the laughter, stories, and love she shared so freely. She will be dearly missed and forever loved.

A Mass in celebration of Macky’s life will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church, 217 Brawley School Road, Mooresville, N.C., on Monday, April 13, 2026 at 11 a.m. A live stream link to the service will be available here at a later time.

As a nod to her signature style and joyful spirit, guests are invited to wear something with a “pop” of color. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, N.C., is proudly serving the Whalen family.
