James Horton Calloway, 94, of Salisbury, N.C., died Saturday, March 29, 2026.

James was born October 29, 1931, in Albemarle, N.C., he was the son of the late Nelson Bryant Calloway and Eva Holt Calloway. James was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church in Statesville, where he served several terms as President of UMM and was several times Chairman of Trustees. After moving to Salisbury, he joined First United Methodist Church. He was educated at New London Public Schools and received an associate degree in Applied Sciences from Rowan Technical Institute in Salisbury, and he attended many classes at Mitchell Community College in Statesville. He was employed at Wiscasset Mills Co. in Albemarle in the electric department and at Mitchell Community College in Statesville as Superintendent of Maintenance.

James served in the U.S. Army on active duty for 38 months. He was in the N.C. National Guard for 17 years and in the U.S. Air Guard for 19 years. He was a member of the Oasis Shrine Club in Statesville.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Rhoda Russell Calloway; and his brothers, Clyde (Bud) Calloway, Robert (Bob) Calloway and Joe Calloway.

Left to cherish his memory are his brother, Lewis (Red) Calloway of Albemarle, N.C., and several beloved nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2, 2026, at Salisbury National Cemetery with full military honors.
