Maria J. Gomez, 83, of Statesville, N.C., passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026. Born in Santiago, Cuba, she came to the United States in the early 1970s in search of freedom and opportunity, and she carried a deep pride and gratitude for her adopted country throughout her life. Becoming an American citizen was one of her greatest joys.

Maria’s life was centered on her family. She was a devoted mother and a proud, loving grandmother whose greatest happiness came from caring for those she loved. Her home was always open to anyone in need, and her warmth, generosity, and strength made everyone feel welcome and supported.

She had an adventurous spirit, always ready to go wherever life led as long as she was surrounded by her family. She also had a well-known sweet tooth and found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially sharing desserts, laughter, and time together.

She is survived by her loving children, Lizabeth Gomez Davidson and Mitchell A. Gomez, her cherished grandchildren, and her dear siblings. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Miguel A. Gomez.

Maria’s legacy is one of love, sacrifice, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed and forever held in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
