Shirley Jones Pitts, 79, of Statesville, N.C., a beloved mother, devoted church member, and esteemed caregiver, passed away peacefully at her residence on March 17, 2026, following a period of declining health. Born on June 29, 1946, in Salisbury, N.C., Shirley’s life was marked by her unwavering commitment to family, faith, and service.

Throughout her career, Shirley dedicated many years to working in nursing homes, beginning her journey as a Certified Nursing Assistant and steadily advancing to the position of supervisor. Her compassionate spirit and diligent work ethic touched countless lives, earning her respect and admiration among colleagues and residents alike.

Shirley was deeply rooted in her faith as a proud member of the Baptist church. She cherished her church family and found great joy in attending services. Beyond her spiritual devotion, she nurtured a love for flower gardening, a passion that brought beauty and serenity to her life. She also treasured trips to Maggie Valley and Cherokee, finding comfort in the scenic landscapes and the memories created there.

Family was at the heart of Shirley’s world. She delighted in spending time with her loved ones, especially her sisters, with whom she shared a special bond. Shirley is survived by her son, Mack Ballard; two daughters, Tracy Ballard (Justin “Bob” Todd) and Robin Geiger (Bobby), who carry forward her legacy of love and kindness. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Anthony Geiger (Sammy), Craig Geiger (Michelle), and Brittnay Tatum (Josh), twelve great-grandchildren, Draven, Sayler, Waylon, Scotlyn, McKeon, Ian, Mason, Nolan, Aiden, Maddie, Benjamin, and Warren; a brother, Jerry Jones (Joyce); and four sisters, Pat Shoemaker, Betty Sanderson, Sylvia Meyers (Tommy), and Mary McLain (Ronnie).

She was preceded in death by her father, Glenn Jones; mother, Hazel Jones Rodgerson; brother, Donald Glenn Jones; and two sisters, Glenda Ballard and Sandy Jones. The memories of these cherished family members remain a part of the rich tapestry of Shirley’s life.

Those who knew Shirley will remember her for her radiant and beautiful smile, a reflection of the warmth and kindness she extended to everyone around her. Her spirit of generosity, faith, and dedication continues to inspire all who had the privilege to know her.

Visitation will be held on March 20, 2026, from 12:30 to 1 p.m., followed immediately by the funeral service from 1 to 2 p.m., with both taking place at Nicholson Funeral Home Chapel, located at 135 E. Front Street, Statesville, NC 28677. Burial will follow in the Gethsemane Baptist Church Cemetery in Olin.

Shirley Jones Pitts’ memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends, who were blessed by her presence and comforted by her lasting influence. She leaves behind a legacy built on love, faith, and dedication—a legacy that will endure through the generations she so dearly loved.
