Steven Hendry, or as we affectionately called him “Bubba,” was a man who could simply be described as “memorable”, and that would be putting it lightly. One of Bubba’s most admirable qualities was that he was a talented orator and writer. While family history often fades as generations dwindle, Bubba made sure that every Hendry knew the stories of where we came from and who we were. He especially loved sharing the stories of our grandfather and the family’s journey around the U.S. pursuing work, eventually settling down in Statesville, N.C. Bubba inspired the next generation of Hendrys to pass those stories on, and he’ll be sure to be in plenty of them. While Bubba passed away on February 20, 2026, at the age of 66, he will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Steven was preceded in death by his father, David Hendry. He is survived by his mother, Marilyn Hendry; brother, Jeffrey (Amy) Hendry; sister, Valerie (Donald) Allred; nephews, Brandon (Katie) Hendry, Matthew Hendry, and Christopher (Claire) Allred; and niece, Melanie (Chad) Watkins.

Steven was never married but viewed his nephews and niece as his own. He was a larger than life figure that was known to frequent flea markets, yard sales, and gun shows around Iredell County. If you ever passed a man in a sombrero, T-shirt, and red gym shorts, you’ve likely had what we Hendrys call a “Bubba sighting.” Steven was well educated—going to ASU, ECU, Campbell, and Mitchell Community College. He came away with a degree in Geology, Business, and a lot of knowledge. Steven took pride in sharing his knowledge of strange and obscure objects, and would gladly (and vehemently) debate anyone who questioned their values. Near the end of his life, Steven spoke with the Lord and was given more time to share his testimony and experience with his family.

The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church in Statesville on Friday, March 6, 2026, from 4:30 until 5 p.m. A celebration of life will follow in the Main Sanctuary at 5 p.m. with Pastor Jeremy Cannada officiating.
