FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Statesville Family YMCA will not be able to reopen its fitness facilities during Phase 2 of North Carolina’s reopening plan.

Although, the Y is so much more than a gym, Executive Order #141 prevents the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina from reopening our doors of its wellness operations.

“We are disappointed because we know that our fitness centers improve health and give us the opportunity to connect face-to-face with people we care about,” the nonprofit said in a news release. “However, it’s the love we have for our members and communities that compels us to follow the path that our state has provided to reopen with safety at the forefront.”

The YMCA plans to share details about pool operations and outdoor group exercise opportunities in the near future. The nonprofit is also finalizing details and registration processes for its day and overnight camp opportunities.

Day camp will start on June 1 and late June for YMCA Camp Hanes.

“We have been working on a reopening plan since our temporary closure began in March, and have been following the available guidelines and recommendations from state and local officials as it pertains to reopening in the safest way we can,” said Stan Law, President and CEO of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina. We look forward to the time when we can fully open our doors to serve our communities in a more expansive wellness capacity.”

During the past two months, YMCA staff members have been working to provide emergency childcare, make wellness calls to seniors feeling isolated, distribute meals to children and families, and host blood drives.
