FROM STAFF REPORTS

Members of the Iredell County Republican Party Executive Committee will meet on Friday, August 20, to select the party’s nominee to fill an open seat on the Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education.

On August 9, District 1 representative Ken Poindexter informed the Iredell County Board of Elections that he was resigning his post, effective immediately. Poindexter told I-SS officials he was stepping down due to his ongoing battle with cancer.

State law provides that in instances where a seat on a county board elected in a partisan election becomes vacant then the party executive committee of the person vacating the seat shall nominate a successor. If that nomination is made within 30 days then the board or commission shall appoint that nominee, according to state statute.

GOP Executive Committee Chairman John Allen has scheduled the special meeting to select the nominee for 6 p.m. at the Union Grove Community Building, which is located at 1869 W. Memorial Highway in Harmony.

All Executive Committee members can participate in the meeting, but only members who live in District 1 can vote on the matter.

Qualified individuals who want to be considered for the District 1 seat should contact Chairman Allen by 12 noon on Wednesday, August 18, at iredellgopchair@yahoo.com.
