The Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education has approved bids totaling $45.6 million for the design and construction of the new Selma Burke Middle School.

The construction contract, in the amount of $41,465,284.89, was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Company. The Rocky Mount-based contractor has built numerous schools, including Asheville Middle School, Watauga High School and Eastern Guilford High School.

Among the bids awarded last week wre:

♦ Architect: $1,756,183
♦ CMR: $193,677
♦ Furniture/Technology: $2,000,000
♦ Cameras for Classrooms: $217,264

The 900-student middle school will be located on 235 Rinehardt Road. The project includes the construction of a 129,420-square-foot building with a football stadium, running track, competition field events, baseball field, softball field, a multipurpose field, and four tennis courts. 

The project is being funded with $35 million from the most recent Iredell County bond referendum, $6 million in reserves from the previous bond sale, and $2 million in N.C. lottery funds.
