Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Mark Wayne Baucom, 50, of South Haven Drive, Mooresville, in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

ICSO deputies were dispatched to the area of Exit 31 south on I-77 on Monday after receiving a report about a shooting.

Investigator K. Sherard arrived on scene and located the victim sitting in his vehicle with a gunshot wound to the face, according to the news release. There was also a juvenile in the vehicle who was not physically injured.

The victim was stabilized by Iredell County EMS personnel and then transported to a trauma center in Charlotte for additional medical treatment, Campbell said.

Deputies quickly learned that the suspect’s vehicle had been located at a Shell gas station nearby, according to the news release.

Deputy J. Kerhoulas responded to the gas station and located the suspect vehicle and Baucom.

ICSO criminal investigators and crime scene investigators responded to the scene to initiate the investigation. ICSO personnel located a Glock 9 mm pistol along with several spent shell casings inside the suspect’s vehicle, Campbell said.

After interviewing numerous witnesses and processing the victim’s vehicle and the suspects’ vehicles for evidence, investigators obtained warrants charging Baucom with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and felony discharging a weapon into a moving vehicle.

Baucom was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was served with the warrants. He appeared before Magistrate Thompson, who issued a $250,000 secured bond.

The investigation is still under investigation. Additional charges may be issued, Campbell said.
