FROM STAFF REPORTS

Candidate filing for the 2022 local and state elections closed at 12 noon on Friday with a flurry of activity at the Iredell County Elections Office.

All incumbent state lawmakers who represent Iredell County now face opposition. Sen. Vickie Sawyer and Rep. Mitchell Setzer have opponents in the Republican primary, while Republican Reps. Jeff McNeely and Grey Mills have Democratic challengers in the November general election.

In municipal contests, the race for Statesville mayor and the two councilman at-large seats have crowded fields with Mayor Costi Kutteh facing six challengers. Incumbent councilmen William Morgan and Steve Johnson will square off against six opponents.

There are 12 candidates for three seats on the Iredell County Board of Commissioners. Chairman James Mallory and Commissioner Marvin Norman are not seeking re-election.

The primary election is scheduled for May 17. The registration deadline to vote in the primary is April 22. Early voting begins April 28 and runs through May 14.
