Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home is accepting applications for two scholarships:

The Rutledge and Bigham Memorial Scholarship – High School Students

The applicant must be a child, grandchild, or person whose guardian was funeralized by Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. This scholarship is nonrestrictive except for the standard of excellence: “B” or above average academic schoolwork, satisfactory conduct and acceptable citizenship, participation and leadership in extra-curricular activities, and community/church involvement. This will be a non-renewable scholarship, and will be paid directly to the winner’s school in the fall of his/her enrollment at a graduate school or a doctoral program. The Scholarship Committee will receive and review all applications and make recommendations. The designated winner will be announced at the Annual Memorial Service to be held in June. All decisions of the Committee are final. The application process will require the following documents: Application form (all applications must be legible or be typed), – Recent official transcripts of grades (High School and College) Photograph and biographical sketch. These items will not be returned; two letters of recommendation: Employer, Counselor, Minister, etc.

The Charles Warner Brown Higher Learning Scholarship

This scholarship will be awarded to a person who is seeking a graduate degree or entering a doctoral program. The person should be a spouse, child, or grandchild of a person funeralized by Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home. In addition to the Charles Warner Brown Higher Learning Scholarship, the Rutledge and Bigham Annual Memorial Scholarship will also be awarded this year to a graduating high school student. The deadline for submittal of this application is April 30, 2022.

Rutledge and Bigham has awarded a scholarship for a graduating high school student for over 26 years whose parent, grandparent or guardian was funeralized by the funeral home. Additional qualifications for each scholarship can be picked up at the funeral home and the Scholarships will be awarded at the Annual Memorial Service held in June. The Charles Warner Brown Higher Education Scholarship is named for the late Charles Warner Brown, who was one of the owners of Rutledge and Bigham Mortuary. Mr. Brown died on January 31, 2008, in Hartford, Ct.

Our Independent Scholarship Committee will receive and review all applications and make recommendations. The designated winner will be announced at the appropriate awards program at his/her school and also at the Annual Memorial Service, to be held in June. All decisions of the Committee are final. The application process will require the following documents: Application forms for all applications must be legible or typed; recent official transcripts of grades (high school for Rutledge and Bigham Memorial Scholarship and college for Charles Warner Brown Scholarship); a photograph and biographical sketch.

These items will not be returned: two letters of recommendation from the following principal, counselor, minister, etc. Scholarship will be awarded on or by January 15, of the following year (semester) upon enrollment in college.

All material must be forwarded to: Rutledge and Bigham Memorial Scholarship Committee, Rutledge and Bigham Mortuary Inc., 603 S. Center Street, Statesville, NC 28677 and all applications must be postmarked on or before April 30, 2022.
