FROM STAFF REPORTS

A Statesville man was fatally injured early Friday morning when he was hit by a vehicle while walking along 5th Street.

Statesville police officers responded to the area of Fifth Street and Raleigh Avenue about 2:20 a.m. after receiving a report of a loud collision in the area, according to an SPD news release.

When officers arrived on scene, they located a vehicle that had struck the side of a residence at 1134 5th Street. Upon inspection of the accident scene, officers located Carl Russell Daye, 62, of Statesville under the porch of the residence.

Daye died from his injuries prior to the officers’ arrival on the scene, according to the news release. Statesville firefighters arrived and assisted with stabilizing the residence, which was damaged by the vehicle.

The vehicle involved in the collision was a 2008 Nissan Altima driven by Robert Lee White, 64, of Statesville, according to the news release.

A preliminary investigation by the SPD revealed that White was traveling west on Raleigh Avenue near the intersection of 5th Street when his vehicle left the roadway and struck Daye, who was walking on or near the roadway. Officers had observed Daye walking along 5th Street earlier in the night prior to the collision, according to the news release.

White was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital by Iredell County EMS personnel for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The SPD Traffic Division is investigating the collision and is requesting that anyone with information regarding this incident contact the SPD at 704-878-3406.
