The Iredell County Public Library began its annual summer reading program Monday with kick-off events at the main library and branches throughout the county.

Big Bang Boom sang fun and educational songs for preschool and elementary-aged children at the Iredell County Public Library kickoff event. The band combined singing, dancing and games into an interactive concert experience for kids and their families.

Band members Chuck Folds and Doug Davis, while playing guitar, would moved toward the kids and interacted with them by making animal sounds and cracking jokes.

During the kickoff events, kids were able to get registered for the program, get a take-and-make craft kit, sing some songs and check out some books.

Around 75 people attended the Statesville event. Around 200 kids have registered for the summer reading program at the main library.

The program runs 13 through July 31. This year’s theme is “All Together Now” with programming centered around kindness, friendship and unity while promoting reading for children.

“There’s no deadline to register and people can come in at any time all throughout summer to pick up summer reading materials,” said librarian and youth services manager Kelli Goodwin. “We have some great grand prizes this summer. “We want people to take advantage of those. For every program that they attend, they will earn a ticket to the grand-prize drawing,”

Goodwin said that the staff has lots of fun events and activities for participants, but some programs require pre-registration.

Each week, there will  be take-and-make craft kits that kids can pick up and complete at home. Families can pick those items up downstairs in the children’s department. They are separated by age group.

“I’m seeing much more interest this year as we are getting out of the pandemic. People are wanting something to do and we are anticipating a lot more participating,” Goodwin said.
