The Iredell-Statesville Schools Board of Education recognized Evelyn Clyburn for 50 years of service in education with a plaque and bouquet of flowers at the June 12 school board meeting.

Clyburn, who is retiring from teaching at Third Creek Middle School, received a standing ovation.

“Thank you for dedicating your life to children. Thank you for expanding the futures of young students. Thank you for caring deeply and spending your life’s work in the service of others,” said I-SS Chief Human Resources Officer LeVar Mizelle.

“Your contribution is immeasurable. Your impact will continue to be felt in many years to come,” he added.

Clyburn’s began teaching in 1967. She spent 30 years of her career teaching for I-SS.

Clyburn has witnessed a lot of change over the years, including the merging of Statesville City Schools and Iredell County Schools. She has taught at D. Matt Thompson Junior High, Statesville Middle School and Third Creek Middle School.

“She has been a constant, reassuring presence to students, colleagues and the community,” Mizelle said.

Among her co-workers, she is known for her honesty, determination, high standards, quick wit and educating the mind and spirit of students. As a side note, she is also known for her fashion sense, hair bows and high heels.

Clyburn said that she has been blessed to teach the students in Iredell County.

“Of course, there were ups and downs and many challenges, but I have witnessed a lot of successes,” she said.

“The good Lord has blessed me to do this because he gives all of us gifts,” she added.
