Sheriff Darren Campbell announced the arrest of Herbert Mark Potts, 63, of Midway Lake Road, Mooresville, in a news release Tuesday afternoon.

In response to a 911 call, ICSO deputies were dispatched to a fatal shooting in the area of Nance Farm Road near Mooresville about 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, the sheriff said.

After arriving at the scene, deputies located David Shane Nance, who had multiple gunshot wounds, according to the news release. Nance was pronounced deceased at the scene by medical personnel, Campbell said.

The crime scene was secured, and investigators from the ICSO Homicide Unit and crime scene investigators responded to the location. The investigators processed the scene for evidence and interviewed witnesses and neighbors, according to the news release.

During the investigation, it was determined that the 911 caller was Potts, and he identified himself as the shooter, Campbell said.

Detectives conducted an interview with Potts, who said the shooting occurred after an altercation between himself and Nance at the gun range, which is located on private property.

The N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy on Monday, November 20, and concluded that Nance died as a result of two gunshot wounds to the chest, the sheriff said.

After collecting all of the evidence and interviewing witnesses, investigators obtained a warrant charging Potts with first-degree murder.

Potts was arrested at his residence on Monday, November 27, without incident. He was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where Magistrate Imes ordered him held without bond.
