A Statesville woman faces a misdemeanor charge in connection with a crash that caused the death of a teenager on April 15.

The Statesville Police Department announced the arrest of Shirley Jean Lyalls, 67, in a news release Monday afternoon. Lyalls was operating a Dodge Dakota on Davie Avenue near the intersection of Ramsey Court about 6 a.m. on April 15 when her vehicle struck Billy Jude McAlpin, who was riding his skateboard on the roadway, according to the news release.

The teen died from his injuries at the scene.

Lyalls was charged with one count of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and one count of failure to reduce speed on Friday, June 2, police said. 

The SPD Traffic Unit conducted the investigation and filed charges against Lyalls after reviewing the case with the District Attorney’s Office.
