Troutman Elementary School students got to work on their golf swings recently with the help of local golf instructors.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade were given a free golf lesson at their school through a partnership with Statesville Country Club.

SCC golf instructors included Imke Zachowicz, junior golf coordinator; Pito Cole, assistant pro; and Madison Branum, assistant golf pro shop employee.

“The students loved it. Students were excited to learn about a new sport. Some students would never have had the opportunity to learn about if Imke hadn’t taken her time to come and share this lifelong sport with all of us,” said PE Teacher Donette Clendenin.

Students were provided with appropriate size equipment and the instructors gave them the general basics of golf, included how to properly grip a putter.

After that, they were divided into three groups. They practiced for accuracy, played a tic tac toe golf game and then practiced their full swing.

Statesville Country Club’s goal is to show youngsters how much fun golf is and give them a unique experience of learning about a new sport while also covering topics like sportsmanship.

Andy Zachowicz, golf director, and Imke Zachowicz are running an after-school junior golf program at the Statesville Country Club and will offer junior camps this summer.
