The Iredell County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday will consider a staff recommendation to allocate funding for construction of the first phase of the Fairgrounds Master Plan.

Phase I includes construction of a new arena, concessions and restrooms. Commissioners will also consider approving funding for construction of a two-story exhibit hall with office spaces.

The county has $16 million earmarked for construction of the new fairgrounds/regional event center. That figure includes $10 million that the N.C. General Assembly awarded the county for the project in the form of grants.

CPL has been working with the county on the master plan for the fairgrounds. The planning process included community surveys and stakeholder meetings

The office space could be used to house the Parks and Recreation Department staff, which would allow the county to sell or repurpose the house that the department uses.

The consultant’s plan includes construction of a 25,000-square-foot arena, two exhibit halls, three barns, an agricultural center and a hotel. The estimated price tag for the entire project is $57.6 million.

The commissioners will hold a pre-agenda meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday followed by the regular meeting at 6 p.m. Both meetings, which are open to the public, will be held at the Iredell County Government Center, located at 200 S. Center Street in Statesville.

In other business, commissioners will consider:

♦ A request from Iredell County Rescue Squad for approval to borrow $72,000 from the Fire/Rescue Small Loan Program with a payment period of 24 months to pay for emergency septic repairs at their facility.

♦ A request from Animal Services for approval of Budget Amendment #37 to accept a grant from Petco Love in the amount of $30,000 to help support lifesaving programs.

♦ A request from Parks & Recreation for approval to apply for a grant from the Statesville Rotary.

♦ A request from the Health Department for approval to sign Pitney Bowes postage rental lease agreement.

♦ A request from Mooresville Graded School District for approval to amend the Selma Burke Middle School capital project ordinance by transferring funds within the project.

♦ A request from the Finance Department for approval to amend the American Rescue Plan Act Grant Ordinance to purchase iPads as part of the telemedicine project.

♦ A request from the Finance Department for approval of Budget Amendment #38 to transfer unused Juvenile Crime Prevention Council administration funds to Children’s Hope Alliance to purchase therapeutic supplies.
